A Hudson Valley Marketplace, Inside RIVERMARKET BAR & KITCHEN

JANUARY 2017

The Tarrytown market showcases top-notch locally sourced products

The excellent cuisine and charming ambience of Tarrytown’s RiverMarket Bar and Kitchen is hardly a secret, with full tables most evenings, laudatory press, and even a few Best of Westchester honors. But what might be overlooked is the high-quality market that lives just inside the restaurant.

The market showcases the “world-class food products being produced in the Hudson Valley and without the use of chemicals, hormones, steroids, antibiotics,” says owner Glenn Vogt. He adds that the inspiration for the market was Eataly in New York City. Eataly’s concept is “ingenious,” he says. His idea for RiverMarket was “to be to the Hudson Valley what Eataly was to Italy, only on a much smaller scale, of course.”

The market offers dairy, meat, poultry, breads, and fresh produce, among other products. Some favorites include Battenkill Valley Farm’s chocolate milk, Chaseholm Farm’s cheese, Feather Ridge Farm eggs, and Wright’s Farm jams and preserves. Also available are local honey, artisan beer, beeswax candles, and homemade soaps. Some of these products can be crafted into custom artisan gift baskets for the holidays.

The market and restaurant have a “symbiotic relationship,” says Vogt. Most products from the restaurant’s menu can be purchased at the market. Patrons can stop by after their meal and buy the ingredients to cook dishes themselves.

A mere 1,000 sq ft, as compared to the 6,700 sq ft of the restaurant, the market holds its own as a popular stop for residents of the Hudson Harbor condominium complex in which RiverMarket is located. The market is “a one-stop gourmet convenience store” [for residents], says Vogt. The idea that products should be grown naturally, be non-GMO, and made without the use of chemicals, resonates with them, he adds.
